Brahms's Tragic Overture and short choral-orchestral work Nänie were completed within 18 months of the death of the artist Anselm Feuerbach, whose paintings Brahms admired deeply. Nänie is a Requiem “in miniature” dedicated to Feuerbach’s memory, making a poignant complement to Mozart’s powerful Requiem.
