BALLET FOLKLÓRICO DE MÉXICO
In Colden Auditorium @ Queens College
Saturday, October 27, 2007 at 8 PM
-Troupe to perform colorful and dramatic dances inspired by Mexican
Culture-
(Flushing -September, 2007) - Kupferberg Center Performances welcomes
Ballet Folklórico de México to Colden Auditorium on Saturday, October 27th
at 8 PM for an evening of superb dance featuring original music, technical
perfection, elaborate costumes and innovative choreography.
Ballet Folklórico de México was founded in 1952 by brilliant dancer and
chorographer Amalia Hernández who, from an early age, was inspired to
preserve the dancing traditions of ancient Mexico and to share its beauty
with the world. A weekly television program sponsored by the Mexican
government aired the Ballet's initial performances. A few years after it's
formation, the company achieved international success.
Over the last 50 years, Amalia Hernández and Ballet Folklórico de México
have created over 40 ballets for upwards of 70 dancers, have given over
5,000 performances, and have received more than 200 awards. Since 1959,
the company has been permanently housed at the Palace of Fine Arts in
Mexico City. The institution's two main companies-The First Company and
the Resident Company-alternate touring in Mexico and abroad.
Among the selections to be performed that evening are the following:
Tlacotalpan Festivity, a celebration of music and dance characterized by
the sound of the congas, the fancy footwork of the fandango, and the
festive mojigangas, enormous puppets that symbolize archetypal human
characteristics.
Revolution, a dance dedicated to women who supported their men, and even
bore arms, in Mexico's fight for liberty in the Revolution of 1910.
The Quetzals of Puebla, an ancient dance where the performers personify a
mythological bird, the Quetzal, by wearing plumed crowns approximately six
feet in diameter. Great skill is required of the dancers in order capture
the elegance, dignity and grace of this sacred bird.
Wedding in the Huasteca is a tragic tale of love, temptation, and revenge.
Jalisco is a joyous, sensual and dazzling folkloric dance from the land
of the Mariachis that culminates every performance.
Ballet Folklórico de México is the first of six family-friendly events to
be performed during the 2007-2008 Kupferberg Center Performances season.
All performances in the" Let Us Entertain You" series are appropriate for
children and offer affordable ticket prices. The next event, "Pinkus and
the Pig: A Klezmer Tale", is on Sunday afternoon, November 18th. Pinkus and
the Pig is a retelling of Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" written by
Maurice Sendak and performed by the Shirim Klezmer Orchestra.
